The drink, which is named after Giovanni Bellini, a 15th century artist, was invented by Giuseppe Cipriani, the founder of Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy. The bar, which started when young American Harry Pickering paid back a debt (with generous inflation), has been around since 1931, and has been a national landmark since 2001.
