The birth of rum dates back to the early 16th Century, not long after the foundation of the sugar plantations in the West Indies. Until the voyages of Christopher Columbus, sugar was a luxury product, and much sought-after, having originally been brought from India via Venice by Persian traders. Initially, the colonist were alone to imbibe this new drink. But soon it found favor in Europe as well. The British Navy took to it heartily once it was discovered that rum can weather a long sea voyage better than beer.
