Melons are frost-tender annuals, native to central Asia, and widely grown in many cultivated varieties in warm regions around the world. The history of melons is a long one; there is a Sanskrit word for melon, and fruits are depicted by early Egyptian artists, indicating an antiquity in agriculture of more than 4,000 years. A subgroup of melons, called cantaloupes, are named for Cantalupo, near Rome, where these melons were early grown from southwestern Asian stock.
