William Phillips is an economist from New Zealand. Deemed by Tim Haford as the 'Real Indiana Jones of Economics,' Phillips has shown an interesting life. Phillips has spent his life as a crocodile hunter, a cinema manager, a member of the Royal air force and escapee of the Trans Siberian Railway. In his military career, he survived being under attack as well as three and a half years as a prisoner of war. William Phillips is well known for his 'Phillips Curve,' a graph showing the inverse relationship between rates of inflation and unemployment. He also created a MONAIC computer, a hydraulic based system that shows the workings of the British economy by turning dials to move water throughout the machine representing money flowing through the economy.
